Taking advantage of the impact of Mons 2015 Group 2 Gallery pays tribute to Zéphir Busine, the father of Laurent, who is ending his term at the Contemporary Arts Museum Mac's in Grand-Hornu. Like his son, Zéphir was born in Charleroi but has spent most of his career in Mons where he was Professor at the Fine Arts Academy. |
This third exhibition in six years devoted by the Brussels gallery to “Busine the elder” is chronological : the artist is moving from a figurative period, sometimes evoking Gauguin, singing the praises of industrial sites in his native Hainaut ( “Porphyry plant” 1957 ) to an analytical cubism in a magnificent “Still life with lemons” from 1953 that reminds us of Braque or even Juan Gris.
This co-founder of the “Hainaut 5 group”, who made sculptures as well as stained glass, started making geometric abstract paintings like his colleague Roger Dudant ( “Space”), before turning to a more gestual and spontaneous abstraction of which "Call", a gouache on Arches paper, acting as a blotter, is probably the best example, this in the heart of a series of works that at times recall Lismonde, or in "Glow", reveal a penchant for expressionism.
The last part of the work of this artist, who passed away too soon, consists of large formats painted with diluted oil and making use of the dripping technique. If "Nostalgia" evokes Cobra and Vandercam, "Sotie" and its strange figure, which seems to open its mouth, recalls Bacon and the figure of the dragon, theme of Laurent Busine’s last exhibition as curator starting mid October in ...
