Discover Belgium’s Pioneering Women Artists in Modern Art

Group 2 Gallery is proud to spotlight leading Belgian women artists who made a lasting impact on modern and contemporary art. From Marthe Donas’s early Cubist innovations in Paris to Suzanne Van Damme’s poetic Surrealism and Anne Bonnet’s refined geometric abstractions, our collection reflects the bold vision and creativity of these trailblazers. These artists not only contributed to key movements in 20th-century European art but also continue to inspire collectors, curators and scholars today. Explore original works, many of which are available for sale, and deepen your understanding of Belgium’s female avant-garde artists.

Explore Surrealism, Abstraction & Expression by Women Artists

Within the dynamic evolution of Belgian modern art, a number of pioneering women forged powerful and original artistic paths—often in parallel to their more widely known male contemporaries. At Group 2 Gallery, we focus on influential female artists such as Marthe Donas, Mig Quinet, Anne Bonnet, Simonetta Jung and Suzanne Van Damme, whose works contribute to both the experimental spirit and the emotional depth of 20th-century European painting.

Mig Quinet brought vivid energy to post-war abstraction, blending gestural intensity with vibrant color harmonies. As a founding member of the “Jeune Peinture Belge” (Young Belgian Painters) group, she helped define the modern art movement in Belgium with works that remain emotionally resonant and visually bold.

Anne Bonnet, often described as a poetic modernist, developed a more measured and contemplative form of geometric abstraction. Her refined, structured compositions—suffused with clarity and calm—positioned her as a leading figure in Belgian abstraction. Her paintings reflect both lyrical restraint and a deep sensitivity for form, space, and rhythm.

Suzanne Van Damme stood out for her fluid movement between Surrealism and lyrical abstraction. A student of James Ensor and a close contemporary of many European avant-garde artists, Van Damme created dreamlike works filled with symbolism, personal mythology and intuitive gesture. Her career included significant international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale, yet her work remains under-recognized in broader art narratives—something Group 2 Gallery seeks to change.

Simonetta Jung became a member of the Movimento Arte Concreta – Gruppo Spaziale. In 1955 she held solo exhibitions in Florence, Venice, Rome and in the famous Duveen-Graham Gallery in Madison Ave, New York. Her work entered into important american collections and museums. Jung created the so called "Tensioni Formative" (1958-1971), closely related to abstract expressionism and Cobra. In San Francisco Jung started a new cycle of works entitled "Homo Novus" (1972-1979), symbolizing the human being turning into a robot. Although her work has been crystallized in various distinct periods, they are in fact organically linked by a slow natural evolution. By presenting carefully selected works by these women artists, Group 2 Gallery reaffirms their critical role in shaping modern Belgian art. These are not simply historical footnotes—they are vital, expressive voices whose art still resonates with contemporary audiences and collectors. We invite you to engage with these rare and important works, many of which are available for acquisition, and to rediscover the depth, diversity, and emotional power of Belgian modernism through the eyes of its women artists.

Rediscovering Forgotten Legacies: Collecting Women Artists Today

The women artists featured at Group 2 Gallery are more than historical figures—they are visionary creators whose contributions are finally gaining the recognition they deserve. Their work, once marginalized, now commands growing interest among collectors, museums and art historians. As interest in rebalancing art history continues to rise, so too does the relevance of artists like Marthe Donas, Mig Quinet, Anne Bonnet, Simonetta Jung  and Suzanne Van Damme.

These painters challenged conventions, explored bold techniques and participated in major artistic movements—from early Cubism and Surrealism to lyrical abstraction and post-war modernism. Today, their works offer not only aesthetic richness but also cultural and historical significance. At Group 2 Gallery, we are committed to bring their legacies to light through curated exhibitions, scholarly research and accessible opportunities to collect. Whether you're building a collection or discovering these artists for the first time, we welcome you to explore and connect with the powerful stories behind each canvas.
