Valerio Adami
Master of narrative figuration

Valerio Adami was born in Bologna in 1935. He studied at the Accademia di Brera in Milan.
In 1955 he went to Paris, where he met Roberto Matta and Wifredo Lam.
His first solo exhibition was organized in 1957 in Milan at Galleria Del Naviglio.
In his early career, Adami's works were expressionistic, but by the time of his second exhibition in 1964 in Kassel, he had developed a style of painting reminiscent of French cloisonnism, featuring regions of flat color bordered by black lines. His paintings became very graphic and during the sixties, he became one of the leading artist of the "New figuration" movement. His technique is very recognizable by the use of dark thick lines surrounding objects and characters treated as flat tints of pure color without any shadows, a very personal style which made him world famous.
Four retrospective exhibitions of Adami's work were held between 1985 and 1998 in the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Centre Julio-Gonzalez de Valence, Tel Aviv and Buenos Aires. In 2010, the Boca Raton Museum of Art devoted a special exhibition to Adami's paintings and drawings.
