The Magic World of Surrealism at Group 2 Gallery

Group 2 Gallery is proud to present an evocative collection of Surrealist works by major Belgian and European modernists. Featuring Victor Servranckx, Armand Permantier, Marc Eemans, Max Servais, Heerbrant, Bruno Capacci and Suzanne Van Damme, this selection draws from the richly imaginative and psychologically charged core of 20th-century Surrealism. These artists explore interior mythologies, dreamlike juxtapositions, and metaphysical symbolism—offering collectors and connoisseurs rare access to one of modern art’s most enigmatic movements.

Belgian Surrealism: Between Metaphysics and the Unconscious

Belgium holds a unique place in the origins and development of Surrealism. While the movement was born in Paris, Belgian artists infused it with their own intellectual rigor and poetic sensibility, often pushing beyond the boundaries of visual convention. Victor Servranckx, a major figure of the avant-garde, brought an architectural precision and cosmic vision to Surrealist form. Armand Permantier—admired by Broodthaers and Dotremont—contributed introspective still lifes and portraiture imbued with quiet metaphysical tension.

Equally compelling are the fantastical and experimental works of Max Servais, whose collages reflect a vibrant visual language, and Marc Eemans, painter, poet and art critic, whose canvases are steeped in lyrical surrealism and magical realism. Bruno Capacci’s dreamlike scenes, often accompanied by poetic texts, bridge the realms of narrative and mystery. Heerbrant, dubbed "the wizard of art," conjures hybrid beings and surreal figures that blur the lines between species, identity and time. In Suzanne Van Damme's bold compositions, we discover one of the few women directly involved in the "International Surrealist Exhibition" curated by André Breton and Marcel Duchamp at Galerie Maeght in 1947, offering a powerful, personal vision grounded in emotional abstraction and symbolic nuance.

A Curated Legacy for Surrealist Collectors

The Surrealist works presented by Group 2 Gallery are not only important historical artifacts—they are portals into the subconscious, symbolic and spiritual worlds that defined a generation of European artists. Each work is carefully selected for its originality, provenance and place within the Surrealist canon. Whether it’s the stark clarity of Servranckx’s compositions, the poetic density of Capacci’s imagery, or the dreamlike ink drawings of Heerbrant, the collection offers deep insight into the cultural and psychological landscape of the mid-20th century. We invite collectors and art lovers to discover these works in person or by appointment—each piece is an invitation to enter the enduring imagination of Surrealism.
